Memories of Paris

By Personal, Workshops3 Comments

A few days ago, I was taking a little coffee break on a sunny afternoon, and I decided to enjoy some delightful chocolate biscuits with my coffee. And these biscuits got me thinking and dreaming about Paris… which launched me into a half hour of perusing our photos from our Paris trip last year… which made me start a blog post. All because of these little beauties. šŸ™‚

Ahhhh…. Rue Picot…. you hold a very special place in my heart. Within walking distance to the Arc de Triomphe… with my favorite cafe around the corner… and the most beautiful Parisian flat. Rue Picot, you are a big part of the reason why I consider Paris to be my second home.

And we just LOVED having our mommas with us for the first week in Paris! They were the chefs extraordinaires during the workshop week 1, and they spoiled us rotten. Marissa & I also just loved having them be a part of our “Boudoir Diva lives” (which is actually quite different from our “normal lives!” It was amazing to be with them as they saw the Eiffel Tower for the first time, and it was just such a special time for us daughters to be with our moms in Paris. Thanks again, momma Carol & momma Cecilia, for all of your help. We love you!

And then there was the WORKSHOP! Day of shooting is always SO much fun – especially cramming into those little rooms in the flat. Thankfully last year we got a huge flat with lots more space. PS, take a look at that beautiful light coming through the windows! So gorgeous.

And here’s yours truly (Kimberlee), showing one of the #1 rules for boudoir posing: DEMONSTRATE. It’s so important to show your clients what you want them to do (don’t just try to tell them – SHOW them!)

And now here we have the outdoor shooting day… with our fabulous models struttin’ their stuff down the street on the way to the Arc de Triomphe! And take a look at that fun black & white striped dress. Made my Marissa’s mom! So amazing. I think we need to have her make another one soon… Cecelia, you up for that?!

What really ‘makes’ our workshops is… the PHOTOGRAPHERS! We LOVE meeting new photogs from around the world, and we love sharing some things we’ve learned along the way with our business, and we also love learning from our new friends. We all have experiences to share with each other, and it’s honestly a privilege to hang out w/ such wonderful people for a few days as we all talk about something we LOVE – boudoir photography!

“Excuse me, people who are entering this hundreds-of-years-old-church building on your way to Sunday mass… don’t mind us crazy group of photogs shooting a crazy model on the stairs out here….”

Cobblestones = L.O.V.E. I want to go back!!!

J’adore Paris.

And now for my favorite. This one ALWAYS makes me smile. We were walking back to our flat at the end of the shoot, Marissa had donned the top hat somewhere along the way, and on the side of a restaurant, someone had taken a piece of pink chalk to the wall and written this lovely note. It was the perfect setting for some priceless portraits of my bitner. Such a good reminder to us all… Don’t take yourself too seriously! šŸ™‚

With dreams of Paris and hopes for the next time we will be in Paris (probably next year!)… xoxo, Kimberlee

June 2011 Boudoir Workshop

By Workshops7 Comments

We would LOVE to have you come out to beautiful, SUNNY SAN DIEGO for our next boudoir photography workshop! We absolutely LOVE our workshops, and we love meeting new photographers, chatting with everyone, sharing some things we’ve learned with our business, and overall having a GREAT time! If you’re ready to sign up for the workshop, go on over to the Boudoir Shop to register now! If you have any questions, please feel free to email Ashley & she’ll help you w/ any questions you may have: [email protected] Looking forward to seeing you here! xoxo, Kimberlee & Marissa

Here’s a quick run-down on the details for the Boudoir Divas’ Workshop…
DATES: June 7-8, 2011
TIME: 10am-5pm, with a lunch break thrown in there somewhere along the way.
INVESTMENT: $1200
SCHEDULE:
DAY ONE: Lighting basics, posing tips, watch the Divas demo w/ a model (past client), then you grab your camera and SHOOT! We have set it up where each of you will have 10 minutes of 1-on-1 time with a model/client… ensuring that you have time to work with them and not have to ‘fight’ for the best shot with 20 other people. šŸ™‚ You will be shooting with our models on our sets, using our hot lights… and you get to use these images for your website! Such a great way to build your boudoir photography portfolio!
DAY TWO: Everything else. Seriously. We try to cram as MUCH as we can into this day… from the boudoir experience to pricing and packages, to studio organization, to post-processing and marketing and advertising. We don’t hold back anything!

TESTIMONIALS FROM PAST BOUDOIR WORKSHOP ATTENDEES:
“I absolutely LOVED this workshop!! Worth every penny and I would totally do it again. All the Divas were SO great! I learned so much and bumped up my portfolio!! They went in depth about lighting, you get one on one time with models and they even go over every bit of their business plan. They are not afraid to share anything as they want you to succeed! I went to school for two years for photography and learned more in just these two days!! So it doesnā€™t matter if you are just starting or have been doing it for years, I promise you will love it! Plus who doesnā€™t want to hang with The Boudoir Divas!!!” – Jamie Sperry

“I am SO glad I attend the San Diego workshop as I not only had a great time and took some phenomenal pictures for my portfolio, but I learned so much about how to launch a boudoir photography business. As a new boudoir photographer, it was priceless to learn the tips, tricks, secrets, and basics of launching my business the right way from the original Divas! I told my husband everything we did and he nailed it – “you went to school!”. I don’t remember school being this fun! If I did, I would have paid more attention! Thanks Diva Team!” – Anita Lubke

“This workshop is absolutely worth every penny! If for no other reason than the killer portfolio you will leave with. But there are so many more reasons this workshop ROCKS! The Divas don’t hold back; they tell you all their secrets, everything they’ve learned, everything you need to know to shoot Boudoir. This workshop is great for people just starting out or those who already have a photography business and want to add Boudoir. I left there with the know how and ability to start a Boudoir Photography business. This is the best money you will spend if you want to learn this awesome niche market.” –Kate Kelava

ADD-ON OPTION: “BASICS” BREAKFAST (this is an optional add-on… we’ll be going over the basics of exposure, making sure you’re ready to shoot in manual mode for the remainder of the day once the workshop kicks off!)
DATE: June 7 (the morning of the workshop, before it officially starts)
TIME: 7:30-9:30am
COST: $75 for the add-on basics breakfast

Here are a few videos to show a bit more about our boudoir workshops:

1. What are you MOST excited about for the upcoming SAN DIEGO workshop?
I’m most excited about learning posing techniques and lighting to get the best photo. Hopefully improving my skills and expanding my reach to clients.
2. What do you hope to learn from the DIVAS?
Besides lighting and posing techniques, hopefully how to interact with clients and how to make everyone comfortable.
3. How many times have you been to SAN DIEGO?
I lived here before when I was stationed in Camp Pendleton back in 2003-05.
4. What is your FAVORITE thing to photograph?
I love to photograph children and very small babies. They’re super precious!
5. Starbucks or Coffee Bean (or neither)?
STARBUCKS!!!! I love the java chip!
6. Who are you listening to RIGHT now on your ipod?
On my ipod? Nothing. I’m watching iCarly with my 2 yr old (Don’t judge). But if I was listening to my Ipod it would be a mix of Maroon 5, Beyonce, and some early ’90s R&B.
7. What is your FAVORITE piece of equipment in your camera bag?
I don’t have a favorite yet. I have my eye on the 85mm f1.4 Nikon lens. Sooooooo sweet!
8. What is your all-time FAVORITE snack food?
Right now I’m in love with Pistachios. This is recent. I eat those when I’m not sneaking a mini reese’s cup behind my toddler’s back.

1. What are you MOST excited about for the upcoming SAN DIEGO workshop?
Opportunity to see your work flow, from start to finish. Not to sound like I’m kissing up, but shooting and discussing the craft of true leaders in your field. Shooting a totally new genre for me.
2. What do you hope to learn from theĀ DIVAS?

I have grown to really try to capture the Ā emotions of photographing people. Hence my switch to Boudoir, I can’t think of a more emotional intimate thing to photograph than a woman trying to be her absolute sexiest and beautiful either for her or her partner. I’ve done the wedding thing and while its an emotional day there is a hectic nature that tends to take me and the subjects out of the “mood”.

Chocolate! and/or Jalapeno Cheetos — they were in stores for a while now they are gone! They were soooo good!
9. When you were a child… what did you want to be when you grew up?
Yawn – engineer – the practical nature of my parents driven into my head! I’ve learned!

Compassion and Generosity

I vaguely remember wanting to be many things. . . a ballerina, an acrobat, a model an actress. It seems like the most common thing was that I wanted to be KNOWN, I wanted to be famous. 10. What one thing in life would you want to remembered for?
Wow, so many things flood into my mind. Good mom, good wife, good business woman, good friend. All of these would be wonderful to be remembered as, but yet not entirely fulfilling. They are all pieces of a whole, scattered around inside, things that I strive to be. The one thing in life that is continuous throughout my day to day, is who I am inside. I am happy, I am proud, I am stronger than even I realize. I want to be known for the person that I am to everyone else around me, whether that is different or the same for each person. It is all the same inside, it is me.

Best Workshop for Boudoir Photographers

By WorkshopsOne Comment

I know what you’re thinking… is this really the BEST boudoir workshop? Well, since we’re a little biased, I figured all we really ought to do is post a quote here from one of our last workshop attendees (so that we’re not just bragging about ourselves). šŸ™‚ So here it is…

“The Diva’s aren’t just bringing Boudoir back… They’ve Brought it back with class & style. This was my first Boudoir workshop and I must say, it completely opened my eyes to a type of photography I never knew existed. I had an absolute blast!! The models were stunning, Ashely made everyone feel welcome and super excited to attend. Marissa and Kimberlee are truly Diva’s in there field, the education they provide and the workshop they put on is truly one of the better and more organized ones I’ve attended.” –Matthew Cotter

(I think Matt’s girlfriend is coming to our next workshop in April! He told us he wanted her to come too, so that means a lot to us!) We’ve got some amazing photographers heading out to beautiful San Diego in just a few weeks, and we’re SO very much looking forward to meeting everyone!

Ready to join the Divas and other like-minded boudoir photographers for an amazing experience in San Diego? Click to register today (nope, not too late – one spot left!)

Workshop Testimonial from Hubby’s Perspective

By Personal, Workshops4 Comments

It’s short and sweet and because it’s from the hubby’s perspective (who I am sure had his initial reservations about spending the moolah for his wife to come to a workshop all the way out in SD) it means so much!!!

“Marissa, just wanted to send a “Thank You”.Ā  My wife, Adelle, came to one of your classes at your studio. This was a hard investment for us. However, it was one of the best investments I’ve made! She can’t say enough good things about you and her work is amazing! Thanks again, Travis, Greenville, SC”

Adelle sure is rocking it! Check this out….

Yay! Thank you Travis for this amazing testimonial for our boudoir workshop! Those of you out there who are considering coming to one of our workshops, we have just a few a year and the next is April 12-14 .
We urge you to just go for it and book the boudoir workshop. We believe so strongly that it will be one of the best investments you make for your boudoir business. See you soon!

Workshop Attendees in FRONT of the camera!

By Boudoir Photo Shoots, Workshops5 Comments

So it seems that many people get into the photography industry because they love being BEHIND the camera; capturing those great memories and emotions for other people to cherish forever.Ā  But many photographers are never on the other side of the camera, and many actually despise being in front of the camera. šŸ™‚

Well, we at The Boudoir Divas feel it is extremely important to take that leap at least once, ESPECIALLY if you are going to focus on Boudoir Photography.Ā  You will only know how to relate to your super nervous client if you put yourself in their shoes.Ā  This will show you a whole new perspective and outlook on the overall experience.Ā  Plus it will help you with posing, angles and lighting to see it from the other side of the camera!

Many of our Workshop Attendees take advantage of getting their own boudoir photo shoot while in San Diego.Ā  We even offer a 10% discount off the productions for workshop attendees!Ā  We also love photographing workshop attendees because we feel like you all become our close friends after a couple days and it is so much fun!

That being said, I (Ashley) just had to share some photos of the beautiful Lesli, who attended our February workshop.Ā  I had such a blast photographing her and absolutely loved her little southern accent. šŸ™‚

For those of you attending our next workshop in April (spots are still available!), and are interested in your own shoot, email me at info@theboudoirdivas.Ā  If you want to secure your spot for April’s workshop, you can do so on our Boudoir Shop.

Mission Statement

Our mission statement is so incredibly important to our business. This was the foundation of WHY we started the Boudoir Divas. It is still important to us today. We first posted a blog post about our Mission Statement way back in 2007, on our old boudoir blog

And since our mission statement is STILL just as important to us today, we wanted to post it again, in case you haven’t heard it:

“Our God grants us beauty and love everyday. He empowers us with His divine spirit. He gives us power and wisdom to create a life that will benefit those around us and those he asks us to help and give to abundantly. He gives us the resources and creativity to create a classy and romantic piece of art that ignites confidence and excitement in a bride or wife and re-enforces beauty in a woman and romance in a couple. With praise and deep gratitude we thank God everyday for the blessings He gives to us. We have nothing to fear because Christ Jesus sustains us.” -THE BOUDOIR DIVAS

To all of our photographer friends… we have been teaching boudoir workshops and speaking at photography conventions for over four years now, and at each and every workshop/speaking presentation, we always tell our attendees that they NEED to create their own mission statement. It’s so important for you to let your clients know exactly WHY you do what you do. What is the passion that is driving you and your business? Why do you get up each day and drive to your office or studio, or ‘coffee shop office’ or home office in your garage… what gets you going? Why are you shooting boudoir? Let your clients know! We can’t tell you HOW many times we’ve heard our clients tell us that they booked their shoot with us, simply because or our mission statement!

But your mission statement is way more than just something for your clients. It is something that will inspire YOU on days when you’re feeling down, or feeling burned out. To this day, we still have our mission statement printed and hanging in a frame in our office. If we’re having a tough day, all we have to do is look at our mission statement, and we are reminded of WHY we are doing this.

Our encouragement to all boudoir photographers out there: go find a place where you can be quiet… sit down today with a journal and pen… and write out what makes your heart happy when you think about your business. In ten years from now, when you look back at your life and your business, what do you want your motives to be? Write out all of your thoughts, brainstorm, and then once you have tons of ideas listed out, you can start to create a succinct, clear mission statement that reflects you and your business. Have fun! xoxo, K & M

Boudoir Workshop

By Workshops4 Comments

Just another little video that explains all about DAY TWO of the boudoir workshop. We usually post videos that show what happens on DAY ONE (shooting, working with lights, working with model-clients, 1-on-1 shooting w/ the clients)… but what happens on the next day? Well, check out this video to see…

Basically, we cover absolutely EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know about boudoir. We honestly don’t hold back ANYthing. Ask any of our past workshop attendees (or read some testimonials here!) We are honored and thrilled to be able to share what we’ve learned with other boudoir photographers. We are by no means perfect, and of course, like anyone else, we have made plenty of mistakes along the way in the boudoir business… which means, we want to share with you what didn’t work so well! We hope to save you from making some of those same mistakes. But we have also made some good decisions, and we’ve seen some great successes – and we want to share with you what we’ve done to get to the point we’re at today. We share all about our business, from shooting to lighting boudoir, to marketing (our fave!), pricing and packages, and setting up YOUR pricing, to post-production and a little bit of album design! It’s absolutely everything. And it’s all about BOUDOIR! (Timeline and more details can be found here)

Our next workshop is February – but it’s of course sold out. šŸ™‚ SO, the next AVAILABLE workshop is April 12-14 (sign up online at BoudoirShop.com). We would love to have you there! If you have any questions about the boudoir workshop, please feel free to email Ashley: [email protected]
