Our Awesome Retreat Attendees

By Workshops2 Comments

As we have mentioned in some of our other posts, one of the reasons we really wanted to a longer, more intensive, 4-day retreat (versus our usual shorter 2-day workshops), was because we wanted to get a chance to really get to know all of our fab attendees. To each of our attendees – we are so glad that we were able to spend these 4 days with you, and we are so incredibly honored that you made the investment and took the time to travel to hang out with us in San Diego. We feel like we were able to truly get to know each of you a little bit, to understand your business, personality and to really be able to speak into exactly what it is you are doing with your boudoir biz.

Another added bonus is the freaking awesome camaraderie that comes from sharing so much time (not to mention sharing a cool home) with others who are your peers in this industry. To spend time collaborating with these incredible people who are doing everything in their power to build a dream similar to yours. The ideas, inspiration, brainstorming, and questioning that is bounced around is like nothing else when it comes to pursuing your dreams. I think it’s safe to say that we are 100% happy with the decision to start the Boudoir Retreats! These are some headshot images that we took (although most gals got a boudoir shoot at our studio too, so you may want to head to our studio blog, www.sandiegoboudoir.com, and see who gave us permission to show them off). 😉 All of these photographers are killing it in the boudoir industry on their own, and it kinda blows our mind that they flew to us to learn, as we have learned heaps as well from being with them and bouncing a ton of ideas around with everyone. These are no longer just our ‘industry peers’ or our ‘Retreat attendees’. So without further ado – here they are, our awesome peers, boudoir retreat attendees, and even cooler than that, our new friends….. boudoir retreat attendees boudoir divas

First up are the lovebirds, Andrew and Maggi Woo, from British Colombia, Canada. These two are such a great pair, and you can tell that they really complement each other not only in their sweeet relationship but also in their business – Maggi Woo Photography. She shoots beautiful images and then shares her work on her blog, through her gorgeous words (seriously, you have to check out her blog – she’s such a great writer!) And then this exec, Andrews, is all about helping out on the biz side, supporting her as lovebirdy husband does and giving tons of insight with his extensive experience in the business world. These two are unstoppable!

andrewandmaggie

Next up is a face you may recognize… We know this gal pretty well at this point, as she has been to our workshop and studio a couple of times before! And did we mention are bananas about her. You just might know her cuz she’s cool like that, makin’ a name for herself in this industry and standing out – it’s the fabulous Denise of Modern Love Photography! We know that our paths will continue to cross in the future. Sorry, Denise, but you’re stuck with us, whether you like it or not. 😉 Go check out her site and see all the cool stuff she is up to (including a new ebook coming out soon!)

denise

Apparently this next girl knows how to brand – I mean, just look at that hair! 🙂 Introducing Jennie of Pink Photography. Jennie owns a studio in Richmond, Virginia, and this girl is going places. Jennie is one of those gals who may seem reserved at first, but that’s just until she’s had a chance to warm up. She is such a sweetheart, and it is easy to see that her clients feel incredibly comfortable around her. There’s no doubt in our minds about why she has already built up a successful boudoir biz!

jennie

Next up is the bubbly-life-of-the-party Krystyn! This girl knows how to make friend. And geez louise she’s another one who will make you feel comfortable in two seconds. How did we get so lucky, to be surrounded with such sweet and wonderful people at this Retreat?! Krystyn has a studio in Pittsburgh that is both a boudoir studio AND lingerie boutique. Super cool. Check her out here: KBS Photography. Also, you have GOT to read her blog post about her experience BEHIND the camera – we just loved reading about her time at our studio and thought she did such a great job of explaining the experience.

Krystyn

Korin, the artist also known as Martina, comes off as pretty chill, but let’s be honest, if you know her, you know that this gal has some unexpected fire. 🙂 (Which, come on, we all have to have a little ‘fire’ to be in this line of work, right?) Korin of Wonderland Boudoir has a successful portrait photography biz in Dallas, Texas – and we just love her style. Plus, her laugh is pretty infectious. We’re excited to see her biz continue to grow and grow!

martina

Natasha! Ah! I think this girl can Carebear-stare a smile right into you heart, hahaha! Seriously though, she is salt-of-the-Earth-good-people. We loved getting to know her (and especially loved hearing her story of how she met her hubby!) Introducing Natasha!!! (Her website is under construction so we’ll have to post a link to it once it’s up!) She is about to launch a really cool concept… a salon-meets-boudoir studio, in South Dakota! We think this gal has exactly what it takes to create the business that she is envisioning, and we can’t wait to see it come to fruition. Watch out, because she’s going to take the South Dakota market by STORM.

natasha

Ok and now last but certainly not least… Miss Agi Magyar, who was definitely the one who traveled the farthest for this Retreat – she came all the way from Sydney, Australia! We met Agi last year when she came to have a destination boudoir shoot with us in Vegas, and we knew we would become instant friends from the very moment we met her. When she said she was coming to the Retreat, we were super excited because we knew she’d bring a fun energy to the experience. Definitely go check out her website, she’s doing great things – Agi M Photography! We also loved reading her review and recap of the Boudoir Retreat on this blog post.

AgiM

We also have a little video of Agi that we wanted to share here. We were filming videos throughout the Retreat, and at one point, Agi asked if she could get on camera and film herself. So she took matters into her own hands and filmed herself speaking! We didn’t know what she had up her sleeves, and we didn’t even have a chance to watch it until recently. Thank you, Agi, for taking our camera and sharing what you did. Your words truly touched us.

And THANK YOU to all of our Retreat Attendees – ahem – FRIENDS – who came to the 2014 Retreat. We are so thankful that we had this experience with you and we are excited to continue this journey with you as we all continue to pursue our passion of making women look and feel beautiful through the empowering boudoir photography experience.

boudoir divas retreat

We have had a lot of people inquire about our future Boudoir Retreats, and we are happy to say that we will be launching the next Retreat VERY SOON!
We had such a great time at this one and we can’t wait to launch one for 2015! And in case you can’t wait that long, we are also THINKING about doing some 1-day workshops this fall on the East Coast. (Looking for 3 hosts on the East Coast who would be willing to let us take over your studio and let in a group of photographers for a day of learning!

EDIT TO ADD: We have now officially launched our 2015 Boudoir Retreat AND a 1-Day Boudoir Workshop in Miami!

1. What are you MOST excited about for the upcoming SAN DIEGO workshop?
I’m most excited about learning posing techniques and lighting to get the best photo. Hopefully improving my skills and expanding my reach to clients.
2. What do you hope to learn from the DIVAS?
Besides lighting and posing techniques, hopefully how to interact with clients and how to make everyone comfortable.
3. How many times have you been to SAN DIEGO?

6. Who are you listening to RIGHT now on your ipod?

7. What is your FAVORITE piece of equipment in your camera bag?
I don’t have a favorite yet. I have my eye on the 85mm f1.4 Nikon lens. Sooooooo sweet!

Opportunity to see your work flow, from start to finish. Not to sound like I’m kissing up, but shooting and discussing the craft of true leaders in your field. Shooting a totally new genre for me.
2. What do you hope to learn from the DIVAS?

Chocolate! and/or Jalapeno Cheetos — they were in stores for a while now they are gone! They were soooo good!
9. When you were a child… what did you want to be when you grew up?
Yawn – engineer – the practical nature of my parents driven into my head! I’ve learned!

Compassion and Generosity

I vaguely remember wanting to be many things. . . a ballerina, an acrobat, a model an actress. It seems like the most common thing was that I wanted to be KNOWN, I wanted to be famous. I wanted people to hear my name and smile in recognition. Then I became “MOM” and suddenly I realized that in my home this is exactly what happens!
10. What one thing in life would you want to remembered for?
Wow, so many things flood into my mind. Good mom, good wife, good business woman, good friend. All of these would be wonderful to be remembered as, but yet not entirely fulfilling. They are all pieces of a whole, scattered around inside, things that I strive to be. The one thing in life that is continuous throughout my day to day, is who I am inside. I am happy, I am proud, I am stronger than even I realize. I want to be known for the person that I am to everyone else around me, whether that is different or the same for each person. It is all the same inside, it is me.

Workshop Attendees in FRONT of the camera!

By Boudoir Photo Shoots, Workshops5 Comments

So it seems that many people get into the photography industry because they love being BEHIND the camera; capturing those great memories and emotions for other people to cherish forever.  But many photographers are never on the other side of the camera, and many actually despise being in front of the camera. 🙂

Well, we at The Boudoir Divas feel it is extremely important to take that leap at least once, ESPECIALLY if you are going to focus on Boudoir Photography.  You will only know how to relate to your super nervous client if you put yourself in their shoes.  This will show you a whole new perspective and outlook on the overall experience.  Plus it will help you with posing, angles and lighting to see it from the other side of the camera!

Many of our Workshop Attendees take advantage of getting their own boudoir photo shoot while in San Diego.  We even offer a 10% discount off the productions for workshop attendees!  We also love photographing workshop attendees because we feel like you all become our close friends after a couple days and it is so much fun!

That being said, I (Ashley) just had to share some photos of the beautiful Lesli, who attended our February workshop.  I had such a blast photographing her and absolutely loved her little southern accent. 🙂

For those of you attending our next workshop in April (spots are still available!), and are interested in your own shoot, email me at info@theboudoirdivas.  If you want to secure your spot for April’s workshop, you can do so on our Boudoir Shop.

February Workshop Attendees!

By Personal, WorkshopsOne Comment

Another boudoir workshop is just around the corner and like always, we ask our lovely photog attendees to fill out a little questionnaire so we can get to know them better before they arrive!  Here it is for you all to enjoy and can’t wait to meet you all in a couple weeks!  This looks like its going to be another fun bunch. 🙂  If you have been thinking about bringing your boudoir photography business to the next level, you may want to consider attending a workshop with The Boudoir Divas!  Not only do you learn literally EVERYTHING there is to know about running a boudoir business, you get to leave with a killer portfolio, and meet other photographers and have an overall blast at our San Diego Studio!  Here is what one past attendee has said:

I am SO glad I attended the San Diego workshop as I not only had a great time and took some phenomenal pictures for my portfolio, but I learned so much about how to launch a boudoir photography business.  As a new boudoir photographer, it was priceless to learn the tips, tricks, secrets, and basics of launching my business the right way from the original Divas!  I told my husband everything we did and he nailed it – “you went to school!”.  I don’t remember school being this fun!  If I did, I would have paid more attention!  Thanks Diva Team!       –Anita Lubke

Our next workshop is April 12-14th and spots are still open!  You can read more about our workshops HERE and you can register by going to our BOUDOIR SHOP.

February Workshop | Deets & a couple spots left!

By Boudoir Tips, Workshops3 Comments

Happy Thursday everyone! Riss and Kimee are busy filming our new LIGHTING DVD, so I thought I’d take a moment to pass along some more information on our next scheduled workshop. 🙂 It will be held February 1-3, 2011 at our beautiful 4,500 square foot studio in San Diego! For those of you who were wondering or emailing about any international workshops next year, unfortunately, we will NOT be traveling for a destination workshop in 2011. We are bummed as well, but the cost for all you would have been too high and we would rather you be able to spend your money on equipment for your studio! On the plus side, there is a huge advantage to coming to our studio for the workshop, and that is being able to see our WHOLE studio, use OUR equipment and our sets and really get the full experience on how we run our studio.

Below is a general time line on how the workshop will run, including some NEW additions to our Workshop!

Want to hear what past attendees are saying?  Here’s a testimonial from Anita, who joined us at our most recent workshop:

“I am SO glad I attend the San Diego workshop as I not only had a great time and took some phenomenal pictures for my portfolio, but I learned so much about how to launch a boudoir photography business. Thanks Diva Team!”

If you are ready to take your business to the next level, launch your own studio, or revamp your current business plan, then go to our BOUDOIR SHOP to sign up today!  We only have 5 spots left!  If you have any questions about the workshop, you can email me at [email protected] or give me a call in the studio at 858.485.0443.  We look forward to another successful workshop and meeting all you wonderful attendees!

Only one more workshop in 2010!

By Workshops5 Comments

Is it just us or is 2010 FLYING by? I swear we just got back from the Imaging USA Conference in Nashville and now we are already planning our October San Diego workshop! The October workshop will be the LAST one for 2010, so if you have been thinking about attending one, we still have spots left! Here is a basic outline on how our boudoir workshop is structured.

If you want to hear from an actual attendee, check out this awesome blog post from Denise Birdsong, a June San Diego attendee, about her experience at our workshop: You can click the image below to be taken to Denise’s Blog, and yes those are her beautiful images taken at our workshop!

So, here I am again, convinced that this IS exactly where I am supposed to be. As I have stated previously on this blog, it is a little scary, a whole lot of exciting and nothing short of AMAZING! I have to say though, that today It is a lot less scary than it was six months ago when I decided to jump into this head first………

I have been provided with some incredible opportunities and situations (not all pleasant) to learn, to grow and to flourish from, I am grateful for them all!

One of these amazing experiences was a recent workshop I attended with the Boudoir Divas in San Diego. I simply can’t say enough great things about the team at The Divas, the experience I had and how HIGHLY I would recommend this experience to anyone interested in photographing women.

Over the last year I have attended many workshops, each time hoping this would be the workshop that empowered me, provided me with useful and meaningful information that would help me become my personal best, to provide my clients with an incredible experience and product and to run a successful business. Ok, so I suppose that may have been asking a little much for one workshop BUT Marrisa and Kimmberlee (the Divas )totally DELIVERED! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Marissa and Kimberlee (The Divas) were so genuine and honest in sharing their experience in the industry, what has worked for them and more importantly what has not and why. I must say, their willingness to open up and share the good, the bad and sometime the not so pretty was invaluable for me! It seems it is just what I had been looking for….. This willingness to share their experiences and answer, very thoughtfully, the questions I came up with led me to allot of introspection and in my opinion introspection is the true hallmark of any great learning experience! I left the Divas workshop more carefully considering my business plan, where I want my business to be in five years and what I am prepared to do to get there…..

During our workshop we covered topics including, posing, lighting, equipment, sales, marketing, workflow, pricing, best business practice and to top it all off we were able to shoot in groups as well as one on one with four gorgeous models (they were amazing, huge round of applause for these gals!)

Thank you again Marissa and Kimberlee for the incredible opportunity and experience, I feel so secure in the knowledge that this is where I want to be, where I should be and where I am going…..

And so this journey continues…empowering woman kind, one cheeky girl at a time !

Oh yeah, did I mention the amazing gals I got to photograph? Enjoy!

If you have questions about our workshop, feel free to email Ashley at [email protected]. You can sign up for the workshop by going to our Boudoir Shop.

Hint, hint! Start planning.

So we have been toying with the idea of the Caribbean and the votes are definitely leaning in that direction majorly. I was just day dreaming today when I should have been working so I wanted to post my happy little fantasy up here to share. No matter if we go to Paris or the Caribbean we will be opening our shop to reserve your spot for the special boudoir workshop mid to late July so start your planning. The workshop should be either late April to early May depending on availability. These workshops are serious wealth of info as we don’t hold back anything! Not to mention you get to write off your vacation!!! We are so lucky to be photographers!

Ashley here 🙂 Kimee and I are just starting to get back to a regular routine at our San Diego Studio after being in Paris for two workshops and dealing with all the chaos the volcano in Iceland caused: disrupting travel plans, delaying flights, canceling our models and many attendees trips, and over all making it much more stressful than it needed to be! Marissa and her hubby, Weston, are still doing a little traveling on their own and we can’t wait for them to get back! But even with all the craziness, it was still a successful couple of weeks and we enjoyed meeting all of our amazing attendees! One of our attendees, Laura from Laura Evans Photography, joined us at our second workshop, just posted a blog about her experience at our workshop. If you have been considering a workshop, and maybe wanted a little insight from someone who has been to one already, check this out. Thanks so much for sharing Laura and we are so happy you joined us and enjoyed your time at our Paris workshop!
