Why boudoir photographers should do their own boudoir shoot :)

By Boudoir TipsOne Comment

I know, I know…almost every photographer we talk to about doing a Boudoir Shoot at our studio says the same thing: “Oh, no, I’m much better BEHIND the lens than in front of it!” However, we have many reasons why you SHOULD have your own boudoir shoot…let us explain our top two reasons 🙂

-A HUGE reason is that boudoir photography is like no other genre out there.  Your clients will be more nervous here than with any other kind of photography and it is really an amazing experience (and advantage!) to be able to say you have been in their shoes and know how they are feeling.  And you really will know how they feel!  It will help you relate to them and say the right things to make them feel at ease.

-We, along with most boudoir photographers agree, that this is truly something every woman should do at least once in her lifetime.  Who doesn’t deserve a day to feel completely spoiled and taken care of and be able to leave with a killer album to show off and remember how hot you looked that day!

Recently, Kimberlee had the pleasure to photograph another photographer.  The beautiful Tracy had attended one of our Boudoir Workshops in the past, and when she got the opportunity to come back to San Diego, she decided it was time: time for her to experience her own boudoir shoot.  Please read an article she wrote about her experience at our studio.  This article was taken from her site: Be Beautiful Photography.  She even posted some pictures of herself from her shoot on her page!  Check those out here.  Gorgeous. (We also included a couple below the article; thanks for letting us share Tracy!)  🙂

Thanks again, Tracy, for sharing your experience with all of us!

Let’s get together, yeah yeah yeah…..

By Boudoir International2 Comments

We are thrilled to announce that we met our goal!!! It took a bit of time but after diligently giving $5 from each shoot, we can say made our goal for the World Vision’s Girls in Crisis Fund. See our fundraising page.

Kimberlee and I love the idea of rallying our boudoir friends and all striving toward a BIG goal together. What if instead of us just starting another goal on our own, what if we all came together toward one BIG goal donating $5 per boudoir shoot toward helping other hopeful entrepreneurial women in Malawi, Africa? Together we could make a HUGE impact on the lives of women who want to do just what we do; provide for themselves and their family through their own business, their own vision and dream. When jobs are scarce it is the entrepreneurial spirit that can lift a community out of poverty. To learn even more please visit our blog post on Boudoir International where we really go into detail.

To learn more about micro finance you can visit Opportunity International or visit our blog post on Bou Int. In a nutshell, Micro-Finance is a hand UP not a hand OUT. Hopeful entrepreneurs are given small loans they would normally never be able to obtain because of their financial condition. They are required to pay back these loans with interest and the wonderful cycle continues with the money then given to another want-to-be business owner. Families are provided for, jobs are created, and the awful
cycle of poverty is dealt with in a real way.

If you want to join this fight please email us at [email protected] and we will add you to the list of our team on Bou Int!

Also, every time you give on the fundraiser site you will have the opportunity to say who you are, add a photo and say why you are doing this.
It may take us a while but we KNOW that this completely possible and will be a joy to work with all of you to make such an impact.

Blessings & xoxo- M&K

Oh PS…..and to motivate us to join together for this cause…. I just have to leave you with one of my personal fave childhood songs….

Article: Why Every Woman Should Pose Nude

By PersonalOne Comment

Although we already think “every woman should pose nude”, we found this article and think it was worth sharing to support our theory. 🙂  Crushable.com posted this article and we highly recommend you talking 5 minutes to read it. If you have ever thought about doing a photo shoot, or shoot boudoir and are trying to figure out how to get more girls in the door, take a look. Here is an excerpt from the article written by Kat Rosenfield:

“As an artist’s and photographer’s model, I’ve spent substantial portions of my early-to-mid twenties standing around in front of strangers with no clothes on. And while it might be initially nerve-wracking, it’s also one of the most interesting and worthwhile experiences I’ve ever had — so worthwhile that I firmly believe it belongs on the bucket list for any young woman, no matter what her shape, size, or level of confidence with her own naked body. Why should you take a photo or two in your birthday suit?

* Your body is beautiful. Really, it is. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re plump or slender, reedy or Rubenesque; your whole self — top to toe — deserves its day in the spotlight. Women put in huge amounts of effort each day just to meet society’s standard of beauty, only to get bogged down by stress and insecurity over failing to fit within that narrowly-defined (and often unhealthy) ideal. Stripping down and showing it off is a celebratory, powerful, even subversive act — and it’s exhilarating. And when you see those photos in the days, months and years that follow, it’ll be with a lasting appreciation for your body as the glorious, gorgeous machine it is.
* It’s a confidence boost. Between diet culture, celebrity obsession, and the airbrushed images that we see every day on billboards and in magazines, women have developed an utterly warped idea of what a healthy body looks like. And the effects go way beyond simply disliking what we see in the mirror; at this point, many women are battling body dysmorphia and/or too afraid to even look at themselves naked. Seeing your own body given just a fraction of the star treatment — with makeup, lighting, and a skilled photographer to help you pose — is a powerful way to fight back against that fear and insecurity. Basically, you are so much hotter than you think you are.
* It’s totally vain… and completely awesome. When it comes to balancing your busy life, you’re always being told to take care, take time out, and take one day a week to do something nice for yourself. Well, go big or go home, lady. Your “just for me” weekly manicure only lasts as long as it takes your nail polish to chip, but a private album of drawings or photos that show you at your prime — young, healthy, and before childbirth, gravity, and the vagaries of time have taken their toll — is a memory you’ll have forever. (Not to mention a great conversation-starter when someone pulls it off your bookshelf in 2072 and says, “Grandma! Was that YOU?”

Only one more workshop in 2010!

By Workshops5 Comments

Is it just us or is 2010 FLYING by? I swear we just got back from the Imaging USA Conference in Nashville and now we are already planning our October San Diego workshop! The October workshop will be the LAST one for 2010, so if you have been thinking about attending one, we still have spots left! Here is a basic outline on how our boudoir workshop is structured.

If you want to hear from an actual attendee, check out this awesome blog post from Denise Birdsong, a June San Diego attendee, about her experience at our workshop: You can click the image below to be taken to Denise’s Blog, and yes those are her beautiful images taken at our workshop!

So, here I am again, convinced that this IS exactly where I am supposed to be. As I have stated previously on this blog, it is a little scary, a whole lot of exciting and nothing short of AMAZING! I have to say though, that today It is a lot less scary than it was six months ago when I decided to jump into this head first………

I have been provided with some incredible opportunities and situations (not all pleasant) to learn, to grow and to flourish from, I am grateful for them all!

One of these amazing experiences was a recent workshop I attended with the Boudoir Divas in San Diego. I simply can’t say enough great things about the team at The Divas, the experience I had and how HIGHLY I would recommend this experience to anyone interested in photographing women.

Over the last year I have attended many workshops, each time hoping this would be the workshop that empowered me, provided me with useful and meaningful information that would help me become my personal best, to provide my clients with an incredible experience and product and to run a successful business. Ok, so I suppose that may have been asking a little much for one workshop BUT Marrisa and Kimmberlee (the Divas )totally DELIVERED! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Marissa and Kimberlee (The Divas) were so genuine and honest in sharing their experience in the industry, what has worked for them and more importantly what has not and why. I must say, their willingness to open up and share the good, the bad and sometime the not so pretty was invaluable for me! It seems it is just what I had been looking for….. This willingness to share their experiences and answer, very thoughtfully, the questions I came up with led me to allot of introspection and in my opinion introspection is the true hallmark of any great learning experience! I left the Divas workshop more carefully considering my business plan, where I want my business to be in five years and what I am prepared to do to get there…..

During our workshop we covered topics including, posing, lighting, equipment, sales, marketing, workflow, pricing, best business practice and to top it all off we were able to shoot in groups as well as one on one with four gorgeous models (they were amazing, huge round of applause for these gals!)

Thank you again Marissa and Kimberlee for the incredible opportunity and experience, I feel so secure in the knowledge that this is where I want to be, where I should be and where I am going…..

And so this journey continues…empowering woman kind, one cheeky girl at a time !

Oh yeah, did I mention the amazing gals I got to photograph? Enjoy!

If you have questions about our workshop, feel free to email Ashley at [email protected]. You can sign up for the workshop by going to our Boudoir Shop.

Paris workshop | Blog review

Ashley here 🙂 Kimee and I are just starting to get back to a regular routine at our San Diego Studio after being in Paris for two workshops and dealing with all the chaos the volcano in Iceland caused: disrupting travel plans, delaying flights, canceling our models and many attendees trips, and over all making it much more stressful than it needed to be! Marissa and her hubby, Weston, are still doing a little traveling on their own and we can’t wait for them to get back! But even with all the craziness, it was still a successful couple of weeks and we enjoyed meeting all of our amazing attendees! One of our attendees, Laura from Laura Evans Photography, joined us at our second workshop, just posted a blog about her experience at our workshop. If you have been considering a workshop, and maybe wanted a little insight from someone who has been to one already, check this out. Thanks so much for sharing Laura and we are so happy you joined us and enjoyed your time at our Paris workshop!
