Using posing to make more money: the fails and the fixes

Our secret weapon is posing. I’ve seen first hand over the past 15 years how posing can sell your top collections (your biggest package of book, wall art, and digitals).

If you’re wondering why I’m so confident about this, I’ve spent my life studying the art and business of boudoir & portrait posing. I’ve written 6 books on the subject, selling over 50,000 copies.

Here are some of the biggest things I’ve learned.

So often photographers think that they need to bring in more bookings to make more moolah.

While that is true in way, what if there was a much simpler way to pay yourself more each month… let me explain.

In teaching and observing photographers since 2008, I’ve seen some pitfalls.

Fail: I’ve seen people change the poses way too quick, going for # count of poses rather than working a pose to make it epic and end up with variety within the pose.

Fix: Keep her in the pose long enough that you can really make sure that you love the lighting, then grab a wide angle, mid, face & detail shot (each from a different angle). Keeping her in the same pose.

Why: Because the more must have shots you have, the more photos she must have (duh). Changing poses takes time, but working your angles and your lighting more within each pose… more variety, more epic shots, in less time.

Fail: Not selling during the photoshoot.

FixWhen you take a wide angle or detail shot say, “this close up of your necklace and lace against your glowing skin is going to add so much to the story in your book.”

Or, “this shot is so artsy, you look incredible, I can imagine you having this framed in your house. It looks like something someone would acquire in an art gallery – it’s mysterious. Like, it would be a fun fact that it’s you and no one would know unless you told them.”

Why: Guide them to picture themselves in a book, in a framed print. Most women need permission to even imagine celebrating themselves in such a grandiose way.

Fail: Not taking the time to absolutely slay the laying down on the back shot.

Fix: There is an art to this, and when you nail it, you’ll know by her reaction and what she buys.

Why: This shot is your biggest moolah maker. It’s typically wide angle making for an epic spread in the book. A woman never sees herself upside down and it’s invigorating for her! (Where gravity for once is friend not foe)

FailNot giving her something to do with her hands- leaving her feeling awkward, and worse, looking awkward.

Fix: The hands add movement and set the tone for the entire image.

Tell her to:

  • Sweep them through her hair

  • Play with the bottom of her curls

  • Grab at the sheet in front of her (pull it up a little to block her tummy if she has mentioned she’s self conscious about that)

  • Dressing: pull at zipper or tie, pretend to put on earrings, fasten a strap on a heel

  • Be playful: give a peace sign, blow a kiss, block the camera lens a little

  • Don’t forget a thumb moment: hook her thumb in her pocket, belt loop, or bottoms.

Why: She wants to look candid, not posed. You do this with movement – giving the hands something to do (think moving your hands a little whilst doing the above mentioned actions) makes a big difference.

These changes will give your images more depth and make her feel and look spectacular.

And what does that mean?

She will not be able to live without these photos = selling your largest collection.
